If you are going out for a sailing expedition make sure that you have done the required homework. Overlooking key tasks and checks can be adversely affect your sailing plans. Remember, with some bit of precaution most boating problems and related accidents can be prevented. Before you set sail it is essential to identify the issues and fix them. Without a checklist, new sailors may overlook something basic because of inexperience, while long-time sailors often simply suffer a memory lapse.
Don't just rely on other people and co-sailors. Make your own checklist. Keep a copy with yourself at all the times. Before you set sail it is important to check the weather forecast for wind and wave conditions. You should tell important friends and family members where you're going and by when you will be back. Don't commit the folly of underestimating the risks of cold water or cold air so dress warmly in layers and be prepared.
It is important that before setting sail you make sure that the drain plug is in place. Also, check for fuel and oil levels and top them up if they are low. It is always advisable to prepare dock lines and fenders in advance. Disconnect and stow away dock power and water lines. If you smell anything suspicious (like fumes) in the cabin and then try to find the source and address the problem instead of ignoring it. A good sailor will also inspect hoses and look for loose wiring.
If you are using
a gas engine then run the blower before starting. Open Open seacock for
engine water intake. It is very important to have safety equipment on
board: fire extinguishers, flares, PFDs for all crew, first aid kit,
etc. As you turn the engines on and they start warming up, check engine
cooling water outflow and engine gauges. Open other seacocks. VHF should
be turned on and please also check the forecast.
